In memory of Art De Vries, long time member and a cornerstone of our club, who died in February 2010, the “Round the island” race, held on the Monday of Labour Day Weekend, has been renamed the Art De Vries Memorial Cup. To honour this occasion, Art’s son Derek and his grandson Devon agreed to supervise this first race and attended both start and finish in the committee boat. Our “across the bay” partner club, Baie D’Urfé Yacht Club, was invited to participate. A total of 41 boats started and 33 finished the race.
The race follows the same format as the previous Round the Island race, which is a pursuit type with each boat being given a handicap and different start time based not only on the boat’s performance but the skipper and crew as well, giving beginners and non-racers an excellent chance to win. And, as Art always told us – “If you’ve won it once, I’ll make sure you don’t win it again”. He pushed hotshots safely to the back of the queue.

Following the race is Ile Perrot’s traditional corn roast, which feeds the Baie D’Urfé contestants as well as our own. Let’s hope for good weather for next year’s race.
In 2010, Art’s name was one of five accepted by the Quebec Sailing Federation:
